When many of the Mormon pioneers departed in 1857 during Church President Brigham Young’s recall back to Salt Lake City, much of the true spirit of community faded, only to resurface in a big way with men and women who dared to make a difference. The colony’s clerk Richard Hopkins, in writing about a harvest celebration noted that everyone of all backgrounds “mingled without distinction.” And Mary Ann Phelps wrote “they worked almost as one family, they were so united.” Newspapers throughout California frequently published reports of travelers coming from San Bernardino full of praise for what the industrious, hardworking citizens had accomplished in such a short period of time. In fact, Chief Juan Antonio of the San Bernardino Valley and his band of Cahuilla Indians protected the settlers from desperadoes trampling in from the desert a number of times. The pioneers lauded the hard work ethic demonstrated by the local Native Americans. Meanwhile, Hispanic settlers from nearby Agua Mansa and La Placita were also attracted to the town, drawn by the generosity, fair treatment, and respect granted them. When San Bernardino filed for bankruptcy in August 2012, the city had pretty much hit rock bottom.įortunately, after nearly five years of stigma, San Bernardino escaped from this humiliating debacle - thanks to the efforts of then-Mayor Carey Davis, the City Council and concerned citizens working cohesively to come up with a viable plan - and became solvent once again on June 15, 2017.Ī year later when the town site was being laid out, several Jewish merchants such as Marcus Katz and Louis Jacobs, found San Bernardino to be a profitable place to settle and trade. When you combine the closure of Kaiser Steel and Norton Air Force Base, the downsizing of the work force at Santa Fe Railroad, and follow that saga of civic leaders not always working well led to tens of thousands of jobs disappearing and a mass exodus of the middle class, followed by an influx of low-income families, gangs and high crime. Over the past 30 years, the city of San Bernardino has gone through an embarrassing and seemingly unstoppable fall. This unique environment can lead to struggles with harmonizing the needs of so many competing interests. People can sample food, or hear music and languages from Native American, African American, Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, and European cultures while there. San Bernardino is a culturally interesting place. ![]()
